Re: the “why is Lucy so young,” it’s pretty common on the East Coast for kids to start school before they turn 5 if they have birthdays in late fall or even December. My nephew from Connecticut has a November birthday and he graduated high school before he turned 18. It’s actually interesting that this wasn’t Rory’s situation given her October birthday and how preternaturally smart she supposedly was, but it’s been established that the writers just do what they want anyway …
I also think the Christopher-saves-the-day silliness is the ultimate reason why he and Lorelai don’t work: Chris wants everything to be easy, and Lorelai is about the journey (except for when she asks her rich parents for help of course). It’s why she didn’t want to marry him, I think. She knew how many corners he’d cut.
True! My oldest brother did the same, starting kindergarten before he turned 5 with an October birthday. Very good point about Rory! Seems like Lorelai would have been putting her in kindergarten at 3!!! Thanks for reading as always, Emma!
It varies so much- I’m from LI, just south of CT, and I had kids with bdays later in the year the same year in my class, but my cousin a few miles away, born with a late yr bday had to wait because of a “cutoff” her district had
My birthday is in early October, and that was almost me, but being born on the 3rd I missed the cutoff by 2 days (Ohio cutoff was the 1st). I kinda liked being on the older side of the students in my class. I got my license earlier than most of my friends :)
Minnesota elementary schools had a Sept 1 cutoff so they required my mom to take me to a child psych to determine whether I was emotionally ready for kinder, because my mother was vehemently advocating I be allowed to start. (I missed the cutoff by 3 days!) So, I was also a fall senior 21 year old.
I wonder if someone official and looking rather kindly told Lorelai “no” and she just accepted it— I feel like that happens sometimes in the show (even if it doesn’t sit well with her). Not to speculate too much, but she was also young and not in contact with her parents, so perhaps she hadn’t reached the place where she felt like she could advocate—or simply didn’t know there were possibly other options (like a child psychologist).
Ultimately I think Rory would have struggled even more had she been put into kindergarten a year early. The poor girl was parentified enough as it is, being young for her grade might have added extra pressure. It totally depends on the kid, I think I was better off waiting a year but some kids might be ready! I love what a discussion this minor issue has turned into
Thank you so much for the info about the artist of Wolf Girl! I’ve always wondered about the painting itself. And I think you’re spot on that it’s actually a good gift for Lorelei.
This episode always bummed me out. Lorelei does not like Christopher as a person. And the writers totally make Anna and Marty into the worst people but whyyyy.
Here is what bothers me about Anna: she had to have known about April’s science fair project. Anna needed to prepare herself and April for what was to come and instead she just acts like Luke brought this all on himself instead of the truth which was that he was blindsided.
How many unintended pregnancies are we up to on this show? Lorelai, Sherry, Anna, Rory, Lane, Sookie…
The more I read these, and the more I think about some people I know, the more I suspect Anna might be a Narcissist who acts like she knows more and has a stronger relationship with her kid but it’s about control- but we don’t see any of it it and what they do show us is dark enough-she’s only peripheral. She and Luke probably had a terrible albeit short relationship while dating

🙋🏽♀️ October birthday here! Kinder at 4, finished HS at 17,and turned 21 senior year of college.
Really good point that that totally should have been Rory too!

Agreed that Paris is perfect though.
