Thank you so much for this post. I remember when Lucy and Olivia showed up, I thought, “This finally feels like real college friendships.” (Reading your discussion reminds me of the great college friendships I had, too.)

There was a Portlandia episode where the two characters in one sketch flew to Italy on a whim, had jet lag, and spent the entire time in Italy sleeping in their hotel room. The obvious “we don’t have a budget to fly to Italy and shoot there” subtext was part of the silly fun. GG would have done better just to have interior shots only for the France scenes—if they had to go to France at all.

Yessss. They should have just stayed in the hotel room in this one, too, honestly. Then maybe they wouldn't have gotten married!!

Why doesn’t he just hand the bakery delivery guy a wad of cash for a couple baguettes?!?

I don’t think the CW has gotten enough blame for the problems with season 7. I know the Gilmore Women are fellow Veronica Mars fans and will remember what the CW did to their final season. It’s like they fired a couple of writers to pay for more glamour for their female leads.

When I first saw this episode, I was exactly the same age as Rory (a first-semester college senior) who was the managing editor of my own school paper and was swiftly abandoning my previous post-graduation plans but didn't know what it was I wanted instead. I was surrounded by people who seemed to know exactly what they wanted to do and I was mostly crossing my fingers and waiting to hear back from various graduate programs and fellowships. When Rory cried and said everything was ending I almost gasped aloud. Was it not just me? Could EVERYONE be feeling like this? It was one of the defining moments of watching the series for me.

That's more or less the only reason I don't want to burn all footage of this episode. The elopement + "let's make a baby" is probably the most gag-inducing moment in the whole series.

I did like the part with Rory- or at least I like it now (when I first saw it I was a freshman in college, so I couldn’t relate yet). I definitely had trouble senior year with the fact that my sister and friends had more defined plans than me (my sister went immediately to law school when we graduated, but I moved home for a year with the idea that I would save money for grad school). I wanted an MS in school counseling which would take two years, so the plan was for me to move in with her so we could both graduate in 2013. The plan did work out ultimately as we intended, but the intervening year of living at home was different because I just worked part time in an after school program and spent a lot of time with my mom and joined the handbell choir at church.

I think many of us can relate to Rory’s feeling of stress senior year of college which is probably the only redeeming factor.
